According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, greater than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have dental disease by 3 years of age. Good dental hygiene increases your pet’s life span and improves his/her quality of life. Plaque and tartar harbour the bacteria that lead to infections not only in the mouth, but also the heart, kidneys, and liver. Severe periodontal disease is very painful resulting in a poor quality of life for our pets. Daily brushing of your pet’s teeth combined with regular professional cleaning by your veterinarian is your pet’s best defense.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

At HWY-403 Dundas Animal Hospital, we understand that pet owners often have many questions about their pet’s health and care. Below are some of the most common questions we receive from pet owners.

General Pet Health

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, more than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop dental disease by the age of three. Regular dental care helps improve your pet’s quality of life and can increase their lifespan. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to infections that may affect the heart, kidneys and liver. Daily brushing and professional veterinary dental cleaning are the best ways to protect your pet’s oral health.

Vaccinations & Preventive Care

Yes. Pets age much faster than humans, and their immune protection decreases more quickly. Vaccines help prevent serious and contagious diseases that can spread through contact with infected animals, contaminated environments, or even through clothing and shoes.

Annual examinations also allow veterinarians to detect health problems early.

Parasites & Disease Prevention

Yes. Veterinary experts recommend that pets have a stool test at least once a year and follow a routine deworming schedule. Intestinal parasites can affect both pets and humans and may cause serious health problems if left untreated.

Pet Care & Treatment

Giving medication can sometimes be challenging.

For dogs:
Medication can often be hidden in food such as canned food or treats.

For cats:
Gently hold the head, open the mouth, and place the tablet at the back of the tongue. Close the mouth and gently massage the throat until the pet swallows.

Liquid medication can be administered using a syringe placed between the cheek and teeth.

Pet Health & Lifestyle

Pets are considered geriatric when they reach an advanced age. Older pets are more likely to develop health issues, so veterinary exams every 6 months and annual blood tests are recommended.

Pet Health & Lifestyle

Pet insurance can help cover unexpected veterinary expenses such as accidents, illnesses, surgeries, and long-term treatments. Having insurance allows pet owners to focus on their pet’s health without worrying about financial stress.
