Vestibular Rehab

What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialised, exercise-based physiotherapy program designed to treat dizziness, vertigo, balance problems, and visual disturbances caused by vestibular disorders. These symptoms can affect daily activities, confidence, and overall quality of life.

At On The Way Physio, we provide home-based vestibular rehabilitation, delivered by licensed physiotherapists trained in vestibular assessment and treatment.

Dizziness vs Vertigo

Although often used together, dizziness and vertigo are different:

Dizziness may include:

  • Light-headedness

  • Swaying or unsteadiness

  • Disorientation

Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness where you feel:

  • Spinning or movement

  • The environment moving around you

Vestibular physiotherapy focuses on identifying the exact cause and treating it appropriately.

Vestibular Assessment & Screening

Proper assessment is critical for effective treatment. Our physiotherapists perform detailed screening, which may include:

  • Medical and symptom history

  • Balance and eye-movement testing

  • Head movement assessments

  • Positional tests such as Dix-Hallpike (when appropriate)

If standard testing is contraindicated due to neck, back, or mobility issues, alternative safe testing methods are used during home visits.

Common Causes of Dizziness & Vertigo

Vestibular symptoms may result from:

  • Vestibular system disorders

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

  • Inner ear conditions

  • Head trauma (concussion, whiplash)

  • Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis

  • Neurological conditions

  • Visual system issues

  • Age-related vestibular degeneration

Each condition requires a different treatment approach.

Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease occurs due to pressure changes in the inner ear fluid.

Common symptoms include:

  • Ear fullness

  • Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)

  • Fluctuating hearing loss

  • Vertigo and imbalance lasting hours or days

Vestibular rehabilitation may help manage symptoms depending on the stage of the condition. Lifestyle changes such as reducing salt, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine may also help reduce dizzy episodes.

Types of Vestibular Rehabilitation Treatments

Treatment is always based on assessment findings and may include:

BPPV Treatment Techniques
  • Epley Maneuver

  • Gans Maneuver

  • Barbecue Roll

  • Gufoni Maneuver

These techniques reposition inner ear crystals to reduce vertigo.

Exercise-Based Vestibular Therapy
  • Vestibular adaptation exercises

  • Substitution exercises

  • Static and dynamic balance training

  • Walking exercises to improve stability

The goal is to safely provoke symptoms in a controlled way so the brain can adapt and compensate faster.
